THE HISTORY of Amorearty
Mark Anthony Tarling "Sparkie"(ME) started "Amori-arty" in my heart and in my head, as a platform of expression for the purpose of creative output, fundrasing, and fun. It was also my chance to develop the desire to spin records around in a certain order which made people enjoy themselves.
My experience of being a DJ at that point was was limited to Woodlands Disco back in late 80's, where I would DJ for free beer at such places as British Legions, working mens clubs and places like that. Freestyle Hip Hop and my sisters Soul Albums - Fresh for 86 you suckers.
I launched Amori-arty (Sexy Art) in 1996 in my bedroom, and set out to be a house music DJ, as well as a fresh faced promoter. With a set of borrowed belt drive turntables and a mixer that ran on batteries - I set off
My 1st break came when my local art centre (Part of the Hampshire Arts Consortium) heard a BLANK TAPE I accidentally sent in (bad recording equipment at home was the reason).
My introductory words inside the cover seemed to intrigue them:
"Un mixed and uncomplicated, welcome to the sound of Amori-arty...............". I then continued to explained my desire to launch a sunday gathering with board games, patio and the art gallery open - with the tape being a sample.
The way in which the cassette was presented, the title “Effective Communication”, and the fact it was blank, seemed to convince them It was a good idea. I thank God I did not have the time to listen back to my recording.
They thought the blank tape = Effective Communication = ART!
1st gig thanks to a BLANK TAPE accident– lucky old fate!
Amori-arty grew from 10 people on day one, to over 100 for the 1st Amori-Christmas event. 2 Funk bands (Soul Jazz & Zoot), DJ’s from as far as Glasgow - Alex Lowes, Marcus James from Renaissance and a cheeky jazz trio in the bar. my first party lost £500 – but the experience was invaluable. (My sister Jo has since forgiven me for blowing the Christmas shopping money on an art rave)
Please remember, an advert in Mix Mag may not attract the extra 150 people you needed to break even.
I had already decided to ignore all the current big, DJ, crowd - pleasing tunes, and learn to develop my own sound. This would ensure that by the time my technical skills were mastered – I would develop a sound, which would be fresh, and style to call my own. The early days were mainly spent in 2nd hand record shops, because developing a vibe seemed more important than the latest tunes. A decision I will never forget.
The Conception Motion
In 1999, I produced my first publicly presented CD – “Conception Motion”. This CD told the story of my birth of this musical vision and the love story within. The CD took me 2 months to “perfect”, and left everyone who heard it in anticipation of a part 2. Initially 20 copies were made and sent to people I thought could help.
Barry Lang from Telstar Records phoned me at home one evening and said it was very refreshing, but lacked a “hook” for commercial attraction – but he did call.
The owner of the Cross club called one Sunday morning and said his copy has been in his CD player all week. In fact I quote “I have to remind myself I did not actually go and buy it from the shops".
We met that week and I was given a chance. "Mark Anthony" was on his way.
I was given a half hour trial DJ set at the Cross-club London - which ended up being 1 1/2 hours and within 2 months was a monthly resident & within 6 months a weekly regular.
Since then I have achieved
DJ'd alongside legends such as Paul Oakenfold, Danny Rampling and Radio 1’s Seb Fontaine
Headlining “Space” NYE 2000 with Norman Jay MBE.
Helped raise over £150,000 for good causes, (Save the Rhino, Wildlifeline, Pattaya Orphanage Trust, Macmillan Cancer research)
Host the 1st televised World Kitesurfing championship from the Dominican Republic.. . . . . . . .
I still advise Bars on musical direction, special guest at many of the countries more discerning parties as well as hosting some very nice events myself under the moniker of (((BUZZCONTROL))) Audio Flirts and a few others..........
To be continued 2002
